Technically this little project could not be called yarn bombing : but craft bombing. The Open Drawer crafters, together with Pubknitters and a few others to boot have combined their skills and love of craft to produce our little heart tree project – I am thrilled with the outcome – a gorgeous concoction of knitted, crocheted, felted, sewn and embellished hearts of all shapes and sizes – simply beautiful – and so much fun. Thank you to all my anonymous contributors. Stay tuned for the next fun project.

Heart Tree Project

Oh my … my little heart tree yarn bombing project is well on its way. Next weekend, we will yarn bomb gorgeous hand made hearts from wonderful creative people all over Melbourne. There’s still time to be a-making. Knit, crochet, felt, sew, anyway you want to make it … just make your heart in red or pink and deliver to Open Drawer, 1158 Toorak Road, Camberwell (near Hartwell junction) by Friday 16 December. We will be decorating the local trees on Saturday 17 December at 11.00 a.m. All welcome for a cup of tea.

WILL KNIT FOR SEX

Although I have not posted for some time on this blog … it’s still alive and feebly kicking while I focus on my 365 day scarf blog – up to No. 265 this weekend folks. However, every now and then something comes along that I feel must be shared and this is one such thing. So … this is an excerpt from a post by braindebris.wordpress (which you MUST click over to and read the whole blog because it is very funny) … and I am beginning (albeit with some trepidation) to think that it may be the way of the future for me (I am still giggling at the original post here). So read, enjoy and click over to braindebris for a belly laugh. Thanks to Liver Chick Knits for pointing me in this direction …

… While not provocative, this photo did bring up several questions. 1. WHAT is she willing to knit for sex? Is she giving away swatches or sweaters? Does it depend on the requested act? Do men who provide merino alpaca blend get “bonuses”?Maybe she’s knitting patterns from Naughty Needles or DomiKNITrix. 2. Why is the man behind her so enthusiastic? Is he her pimp or is he just finally glad he’s figured out how to get her to HAVE sex? Notice the lip prints on his shirt? HMMMMM. 3. Who is the slightly inebriated looking gentleman with his dirty hands on gramma? Maybe he’s the infommercial guy and the man in the back is the testimonial happy customer. Maybe he’s an alpaca farmer and is throwing her this party for increasing his profits through her innovative entrepenuership. 4. How long does it take her to knit for sex? She better be using Addi-turbos if she’s got a high sex drive! 5. Why is she advertising on a paper cone hat? Couldn’t she knit one? 6. Does this mean that we know what all the little old men wearing scarves have been doing? Is the length of the scarf indicative of anything? 7. Is this why so many elderly ladies take up knitting? I thought it might be because they needed something to do while waiting for the Viagra to kick in. At the very least I thought the needles would be a great deterrant. Seems not so much!

Flower Garland Yarn Bombing

Almost but not quite complete, our little Pubknitters knitting group have had a wonderful couple of weeks creating flowers and leaves for our yarn bombing adventure. We spent the afternoon today sewing it all together … and now the piece is complete. Once we have made a decision on a suitable location, we will install. We are thrilled with the outcome – and all very excited!!! Brilliant job Pubknitters.

Snugglepot and Cuddlepie

I am published. Or I should say “we” are published. My sister in law Margaret and I submitted a freeform crochet/knit piece to the International Freeform Crochet Guild as part of 2011 Freeform Challenge : Mythologies, Stories and Fairytales. The challenge was to create one freeform piece interpreting the theme. We were not restricted except that our creation was to include include some crochet or knitting. Our piece was inspired by May Gibbs’ iconic Snugglepot and Cuddlepie childrens’ stories. Over 50 submissions were received and they have now been published in a book based on the theme.

WWKIP 2011 Federation Square : Melbourne

What a truly fantastic day we had at Federation Square in Melbourne today. Our small contingent of five from our Pubknitters group joined the hundreds of other erstwhile knitters and yarnbombers gathered to bring their secret lives out into the public eye in a bold display of solidarity. It was a lovely sunny winter day although quite chilly. That, however, didn’t stop the many women, men and children participating – and what fun we had – to the great bemusement of the many onlookers. Being Jazz Week in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to be able to knit and groove simultaneously … a small challenge, but one that was met with equanimity and swaying hips. It should be noted that the day was organised and sponsored by the Australian Country Spinners who generously donated yarn, needles, pattern books and their time to the many gathered to create blanket squares for the Save the Children Fund.

WWKIP Day 2011

This weekend (Saturday) is World Wide Knit in Public Day. There are many knitfests planned around the world for this weekend and my pubknitting group will be attending a public knit in Melbourne’s Federation Square (11 a.m. Saturday 11 June). What a bunch of exhibitionists we knitters are. Click here to find one in your area.

It should be fun (providing the weather doesn’t try to defeat us). In any case. There are plenty of projects to work on … but the one I am most excited about is our little Pubknitters yarn bombing adventure. We are putting together a long gorgeous flower garland to adorn some public property around Open Drawer in Camberwell. Such a fun little project – it will be installed on 19 June – so if you are a Melbourne resident (somewhere around the Camberwell/Hartwell area) keep your eye out in Toorak Road Hartwell near the intersection of Summerhill Road for our little piece of yarn grafitti. As I said earlier … us knitters are big exhibitionists.

Pom Pom Boa Extravaganza

I have had a busy couple of weeks work wise and finishing off some projects … our knitting group entry into the scarf festival … was brilliant (as least it looks brilliant) – can’t be entirely sure if it’s wearable. My weekly freeform knitting classes are coming along nicely – the women are starting to be a little more adventurous which is wonderful. I am planning a couple more Crochet Coral workshops before the Bendigo Wool and Sheep Show in August. But my next project is a little yarn bombing adventure. Watch this space.

No time to blog of late – what with Easter break (Bluesfest 2011 in Byron Bay – brilliant), work commitments, teaching commitments, family, friends, knitting projects (a couple up my sleeve) and my Scarf blog (which is a daily meditation on my love of all things scarf) – I can safely say that this blog has certainly had the short shrift. However, I am here now to share with you my latest acquisition – a truly gorgeous (clever, amazing, fabulous, beautiful – heap on the adjectives here) hand felted rather large poppy brooch with embroidery and beading detail. The tag on the back says The Grace Collection Sydney – I bought this at Open Drawer in Camberwell (my favourite place for all things art/craft). It called out to me when I was teaching freeform knitting last week. I just could not ignore it … so now it is mine! I will wear it with joy!!!!!

Meet The Guys

A brief diversion from all things yarn for a moment in time … Meet “The Guys”. Can’t remember their real names but I bought them recently at a brilliant exhibition at Open Drawer. The work is by Ann-Maree Gentile of AmUsing Clay. She hails from Warrandyte in Victoria where she has a studio which is open (at times) to the public. Ann-Maree specialises in whimsical one off clay sculptures – often made from whatever is on hand, recycling and playing with different materials. Her work has a strong pop influence with many recurring themes and icons. Who could resist these gorgeous faces????
